Included in a single licence fee is the rent charge, heat light and power, cleaning, reception and maintenance and monitoring of the sophisticated intruder alarm system. The Centre is located on the corner of Barrack Street and Quenby Street (off Chester Road) approximately ½ km from Deansgate Station. The principal aim of Firmstart (Manchester) Ltd, established in 1986, is to develop the economic base of the Hulme and Moss Side areas of Manchester in order to provide job, investment and training opportunities to the local community and business sector. Though incorporated and functioning as a private company Firmstart's aims are broadly social. The company currently employs four full time and one part time members of staff and is based at St Wilfrid's Enterprise Centre, on Royce Road in Hulme. Its principal objective is to 'alleviate deprivation and poverty among the people of Hulme and Moss Side by establishing and promoting self employment opportunities, training and community based initiatives'. A principal concern is the provision of good quality and affordable workspace. To this end Firmstart owns and manages the St Wilfrid's Enterprise Centre in north Hulme, and manages the Cornbrook Enterprise Centre in the neighbouring St George's district. St Wilfrid's The Cornbrook Centre Firmstart also provides other services designed to stimulate the local economy and facilitate development in the local area and inward investment. These include: Management of the Moss Side and Hulme Commercial Sites and Property Database (a European Union 'Urban' assisted project) Editorial and preparation of 'People & Property' - a quarterly journal focus on local urban strategy (in association with McMillan Scott, publishers of The Record, the newspaper of Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Industry) Facilitation and meeting space (at St Wilfrid's Enterprise Centre) for a number of local economic and social focus groups, including Moss Side and Hulme Regeneration Forum, and Hulme Tenants Alliance. Firmstart also arranges and stages both one-off and serial business and social events, including conferences, exhibitions, training and networking events and fun days. The company also has a consulting and advisory role. THIS spring sees the unveiling of the next stage of Moss Side and Hulme’s regeneration. The long-awaited Hulme High Street market is due to throw open its doors and begin trading at the beginning of May. The £1.3 million development is a keystone in establishing a new retail heart to the district. It is hoped that the market place will not just be a home to a lively market hall, but also a place for people to meet up and socialise. The market is being funded through a joint venture between Groupe Geraud UK and Manchester City Council, and both see the market’s potential. “Groupe Geraud’s goal is to create a new market for Hulme that local residents and visitors will enjoy visiting,” said the group’s chief executive Frederic Bonnet. “A local market is the heart of the community.” Barbara McLoughlin, Moss Side and Hulme Partnership director added: “The market will become an important focal point for community activity. Not only will this provide an excellent facility for shoppers in the area, but it will be a place to meet friends and neighbours. “By injecting new life and vibrancy into this part of Hulme, the market will become a tremendous community asset.” With the new market residing just next door to Asda, Frederic Bonnet hopes that they can provide something extra for shoppers, allowing the two to feed off each other, rather than compete for business. “There will be a range of stalls in the market, offering everything from fresh food and vegetables to clothing and books. We have in fact got more applications from stallholders than we have stalls. We think that people who shop at Asda will also visit the market, that we will create a close-knit centre for shopping.” And it is hoped that the market place will not just bring new life to the heart of Moss Side and Hulme, but set new standards for markets across the UK. “Groupe Geraud recognises that many markets in the UK do not reflect modern shopping habits and expectations. We want to work with the traders through their representatives to modernise markets in the UK, by not only making them more attractive environments for customers but also raising the range of goods sold. Together we want to create a fresh kind of market.” It has been a long haul since the closure of the old Moss Side market to the re-opening, and the process has been one which everyone involved agrees has taken too long. However, it is hoped that, with the establishment of a new High Street, that new life will be breathed into the heart of the community.
