The principal aim of Firmstart (Manchester) Ltd, established in 1986, is to develop the economic base of the Hulme and Moss Side areas of Manchester in order to provide job, investment and training opportunities to the local community and business sector. Though incorporated and functioning as a private company Firmstart's aims are broadly social. The company currently employs four full time and one part time members of staff and is based at St Wilfrid's Enterprise Centre, on Royce Road in Hulme. Its principal objective is to 'alleviate deprivation and poverty among the people of Hulme and Moss Side by establishing and promoting self employment opportunities, training and community based initiatives'.

A principal concern is the provision of good quality and affordable workspace. To this end Firmstart owns and manages the St Wilfrid's Enterprise Centre in north Hulme, and manages the Cornbrook Enterprise Centre in the neighbouring St George's district.

| Firmstart also provides other services designed to stimulate the local economy and facilitate development in the local area and inward investment.

Management of the Moss Side and Hulme Commercial Sites and Property Database (a European Union 'Urban' assisted project) | Editorial and preparation of 'People & Property' - a quarterly journal focus on local urban strategy(in association with McMillan Scott, publishers of The Record, the newspaper of Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Industry)
| Facilitation and meeting space (at St Wilfrid's Enterprise Centre) for a number of local economic and social focus groups, including Moss Side and Hulme Regeneration Forum, and Hulme Tenants Alliance.
| Firmstart also arranges and stages both one-off and serial business and social events, including conferences, exhibitions, training and networking events and fun days.
